NEW
CHALLENGES AND HORIZONS. Whoever
reflects a bit and takes stock of the giant strides our Country has taken
towards standardisation of Basque will surely appreciate that the area
which has advanced most decisively towards said standardisation has been
the teaching of the language, where the various demands that have arisen
have been responded to relatively punctually throughout the years without
being able to satisfactorily fulfil all the needs in spite of the prodigious
effort put forth to publish didactic texts and supplementary material.
On the other hand, parallel and paradoxically, we have witnessed and increase in new requirements and needs. The generation that accede to higher education in Basque as the instrument for learning and cultural expression have highlighted the precariousness and lack of system of the publishing infrastructure for secondary and higher education texts. In spite of the quantitatively and qualitatively great effort made in the public as well as the private sectors during the last lustra, we have seen that our adolescents and young people, after long years of learning and cultivating their ancestral language, find themselves obliged to interrupt or restrict their cultural involvement in Basque expression since they must necessarily turn to Spanish and French publications due to the lack of an adequately varied and interesting Basque infrastructure that would permit continuity in the development of the cultural bilingualism begun in early education. This stifling of the expectations o growth so ominously accentuated in the upper levels of education is a luxury our Country cannot afford....especially not now when we want to incorporate into Europe with our own identity traits. Therefore, it seems that we cannot put off uniting all the individual and collective initiatives that have arisen from within and from out of the University to design, develop and carry out a project of selection, translation and publication of the works fundamental to universal thought of all ages. |
